A new parental leave policy for military members has been introduced, effective late December. All service members, including birthing, adoptive parents, and spouses, can now take up to 12 weeks of parental leave within the first year after a child's birth. This leave can be taken in multiple segments, significantly increasing the previous allowance, which generally provided six weeks of convalescent leave followed by six weeks of bonding leave for birthing parents, and varied up to three weeks for non-birthing parents. This change, mandated by Congress as part of the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, standardizes parental leave across services and ensures equal bonding time for both partners.
