Hey everyone, Steve Patterson here from Photoshop Essentials.com! In this video, Ill show you how to edit a smart object, and how to replace its contents, in Photoshop! Two powerful advantages of using smart objects are that we can edit their contents, and we can even replace their contents, and have our changes instantly appear in the document. If you can't edit text in Photoshop, that's most likely because your layer is locked. To unlock the layer, select it in the Layers panel and click the lock icon. You can then edit the text within that layer.
The simple answer is that by default, Photoshop locks text layers to prevent accidental changes. However, you can unlock a text layer by clicking on the “Lock” icon in the Layers panel. Once unlocked, you can then edit the text just like any other layer.
If your layer is locked or partially locked, click the small lock icon to the right of the layer name to unlock it. To lock a layer, select it and click the lock icon above your stack of layers in the Layers panel.
Go to the Layers panel, Right-click on the layer and, from the pop-up menu that appears, choose Rasterize Type. That's Adobe speak for “make this type layer into pixels.” That's it—it now treats your type like a photo, and you can erase it with the Eraser tool (E), or delete parts of it, and so on.
