The transition period of the previous regulation in Article 120 (3) MDR expires on 26 May 2024. The reason for the need to extend the periods is that due to the lack of notified bodies, (rapid) certification cannot be carried out for all medical devices until the MDR deadline expires.
High-risk devices would be subject to the shorter transition period ending in 2027, while low- and medium-risk devices would have until the end of 2028 to complete a conformity assessment.
After the Deadline While this is the final step in demonstrating compliance with the EU MDR, the process can take up to 14 months to complete from the initial submission to a notified body.
New MDR transition dates The MDR transition delay extends the transition period for Class III devices and Class IIb implantable devices to December 2027. The transition period for Class I, Class II and Class IIb non-implantable devices is now extended to December 2028.
