A returned check fee (also known as an NSF fee, or non-sufficient funds fee) is charged by your bank or credit union whenever you write a check without enough funds in your account to pay the amount.
If your financial institution doesnt cover the check, it bounces and is returned to the depositors bank. Youll likely be charged a penalty for the rejected check; this is a nonsufficient funds fee, also known as an NSF or returned item fee. This costs about the same as an overdraft fee around $35.
From the Reports menu, select Customers Receivables, then choose Customer Balance Detail. Double-click the original payment line for the NSF transaction. In the Receive Payments window, move the check mark from the invoice to the reversing journal entry.
Contact your bank. Let the bank know youve written a check and have realized you dont have the funds in your account to cover the transaction. You might be able to work with your bank to move money from another account to pay the check and cover any fees youve been charged.
Some institutions may waive returned payment fees in certain conditions. For example, they may waive the fee for a first-time occurrence or for customers with accounts in good standing. Others may also waive the fee in case the consumer has a good reason why the payment was rejected.
Open the invoice that has the rejected bank transfer payment. Select the Payment link to open the rejected payment. Uncheck the original invoice, then select the new one you created in step 3. Select Save and close.
After you find out that the check bounced, contact the bank. Even though the check bounced at one time, there might be sufficient funds now. Ask if the bank can try depositing the check again. If there still arent sufficient funds in the customers account, ask the bank if they can do an enforced collection.
When you cash or deposit a check and theres not enough funds to cover it in the account its drawn on, this is also considered non-sufficient funds (NSF). When a check is returned for NSF in this manner, the check is generally returned back to you. This allows you to redeposit the check at a later time, if available.
