Tins low melting point makes it unsuitable for high-temperature applications. While not a precious metal, tin can be relatively costly compared to many industrial alloys.
In the cosmos there are 1.33 atoms of tin per 1 106 atoms of silicon, an abundance roughly equal to that of niobium, ruthenium, neodymium, or platinum. Cosmically, tin is a product of neutron absorption.
Tin shows a chemical similarity to both of its neighbors in group 14, germanium and lead, and has two main oxidation states, +2 and the slightly more stable +4.
Tin is a relatively scarce element with an abundance in the earths crust of about 2 parts per million (ppm), compared with 94 ppm for zinc, 63 ppm for copper, and 12 ppm for lead. Most of the worlds tin is produced from placer deposits; at least one-half comes from Southeast Asia.
Tin is a relatively scarce element, with a low abundance in the earths crust. For context there is approximately 45x more Zinc in the Earths crust than tin, and 25,000x more Iron. Tin mines are often open cast and require large amounts of excavation to extract.
Tin resources globally, as calculated by ITA, totalled 15.4 Mt at the end of 2019, of which 6.0 Mt (38.9%) was CRIRSCO-compliant. Global tin reserves, a subset of the aforementioned figure, totalled 5.5 Mt, of which less than one third (1.6 Mt) was reported to CRIRSCO standards.
Use grade #000 steel wool and denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner. Scrub the tin with the solvent and steel wool thoroughly then rinse and dry. Now brush on the tin ager until you have the aging effect you are looking for. This step may take a few minutes depending on how dark you want your piece to look.
Liberally sprinkle sea salt or table salt across the surface. The salt crystals will help create the rusty texture. Spray or wipe white vinegar over the salt-coated panels. The vinegar reacts with the salt to speed up the oxidizing process.
