From the Properties Panel, activate the On-Image Adjustment Tool. Then, click on the color you would like to select. Drag the Saturation slider all the way to the left to desaturate your selected color.
Mix a can of tinted polyurethane thoroughly. The color of the original stain and the tinted polyurethane combine, creating a darker, slightly different shade. For example, neutralize a light, warm maple with a darker oak to neutralize orange tones while deepening the furniture's color.
Using Gel Stain, you can stain wood furniture darker without stripping the old stain AND without sanding the old finish off.
Hit Ctrl/Cmd+U to open the Hue/Saturation dialog box. Check the Colorize box, then set the hue for 22, the saturation for 53, and to get a more authentic wood color, pull the lightness a bit to the dark side. I chose -19. Press OK.
To get a darker coloring with any stain when you are wiping off the excess, sand to a coarser grit. More of the colorant will lodge in the sanding scratches, producing a darker effect. In the example here, I sanded to #100 grit (top) and #400 grit (bottom).
Yes, each layer will darken your project even more. You can also start with a lighter color Gel Stain and layer on darker colors.
Method 1: Change Wood Color with a New Stain Remove the existing finish completely by sanding or stripping. Determine the wood species. ... Determine the undertone of the wood stains you are considering. Choose a wood stain that will either complement or counteract the existing undertone to get the look you want.
Staining over stain is easy and works beautifully if you're applying a dark stain over a lighter stain on raw wood. This rule applies to oil-based stains, water-based stains, and gel stains.
Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color... and click OK on the menu that pops up. This will bring up the Color Picker menu. Choose what color you'd like to make your object.
Reviewing the tool properties window for the Black & White Adjustment Layer, you will see the following ranges of color: red, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and magenta. Dragging any of these sliders to the left will darken that hue while dragging to the right will lighten it.
