In this Photoshop tutorial, the presenter explains three easy methods to darken images. The third method he discusses is using the exposure adjustment layer. This adjustment can be accessed in the adjustments panel or at the bottom of the layers panel. The exposure slider has three options including exposure, offset, and gamma correction. Increasing exposure will brighten the image, while decreasing it will darken the image. Adjusting the offset will shift the midtones, and adjusting the gamma correction will affect the overall balance of the image.

Go to Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Brightness/Contrast (alternatively, you can open the Adjustments panel and click on the Brightness/Contrast icon). Drag the slider that controls Contrast to the right to increase the images contrast. The Contrast range is between -50 and 100.
One way is to use the Burn Tool. With the Burn Tool selected, you can then hover over the area that you want to darken and click and drag. The more you drag, the darker the area will become. Another way to darken an area is to use a Levels Adjustment Layer.

There are a few different ways that you can darken an area in Photoshop. You can use the Burn Tool, or you can use an Adjustment Layer such as Levels or Curves. You can also darken an entire image by going to Image Adjustments and dragging the black slider to the right.
To set image brightness in CSS, use filter brightness(%). Remember, the value 0 makes the image black, 100% is for original image and default. Rest, you can set any value of your choice, but values above 100% would make the image brighter.
