After using a wood cleaner or stain stripper, a wood brightener should be applied to neutralize the pH level and brighten the wood back to its original appearance. Note: If the wood is new, no prepping is needed and staining can be done right away.
You should not stain a cutting board, instead you can use oils to bring out the natural color of various hardwood lumber species. Wood stains contain toxic dyes and pigments that would contaminate the food when used as a cutting board.
4y ago. Yes you can, depending on what kind of stain youre using. You can dilute with either mineral spirits for oil-based stains or water for water-based stains, or if you have NGR or lacquer-based stains, use lacquer thinner. Scooter127. 4y ago. alekhiddel. 4y ago.
For items like cutting boards, choose oil finishes instead of film finishes that have a chance of cracking. Mineral oil, also known as liquid paraffin and butchers block finish, is easy to apply. It has lower water resistance and requires reapplication more frequently.

We dont recommend using a stain on a butcher block counter top because the stain is most likely not food safe. The stain could seep out of the counter and into your food, causing the food to taste bad and possibly be toxic. Our Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner are better alternatives and are food safe.

Just be sure to choose a mineral oil that is labelled as food-safe or food-grade. Mineral oil, also known as liquid paraffin, has no smell, colour, or taste, which is ideal for finishing a food-preparation surface like a wood cutting board.
