XPS is used to provide information about the elemental composition of the coatings. The XPS spectrometer is used to obtain a survey spectrum, from which the elements present can be determined. Individual spectral peaks are then examined at higher energy resolution to give information on chemical state.
Although XPS is often considered a nondestructive technique, it too can cause damage to sensitive samples. Sometimes, samples will show visible discoloration where the x-ray beam was incident.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
Simply put, XPS uses an x-ray beam to excite atoms on the surface of a solid sample, which spurs the release of photoelectrons. From there, the kinetic energy and the number of electrons that escape from the top 0 to 10 nanometers of the sample are measured.
XPS is usually used to determine the elemental composition of a nanomaterial, to see if there are any contaminants at the surface of the nanomaterial and in what quantities they exist, to determine the chemical states of a nanomaterial, to deduce the empirical formula of a nanomaterial, to determine the binding
The information XPS provides about surface layers or thin film structures is important for many industrial and research applications where surface or thin film composition plays a critical role in performance including: nanomaterials, photovoltaics, catalysis, corrosion, adhesion, electronic devices and packaging,
ABSTRACT: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a very efficient and still progressing surface analysis technique. However, when applied to nano-objects, this technique faces drawbacks due to interactions with the substrate and sample charging effects.
