The standard technique of SMILE involves docking, femtosecond laser application, lenticule dissection, and extraction. The refractive lenticule is separated from the surrounding stroma by blunt dissection via the small side-cut incision, first in the anterior plane followed by the posterior plane.
Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is an outpatient laser eye surgery procedure that changes the shape of the cornea to correct refractive errors. It is FDA-approved only for the treatment of myopia at this time.
Research thus far has shown SMILE to be about as effective as LASIK. For example, one study of people who had SMILE surgery found that 99% of them had at least 20/40 vision six months after the surgery. The same study showed that 88% had 20/20 vision at their six-month check-up.
SMILE lasts for about 10-15 minutes. Prior to starting the procedure, the surgical team inputs measurements tailored to your eye. After this, patients are given numbing drops to numb the eye. Anxiolytics can also be provided to put patients at ease.
Undercorrection or Overcorrection SMILE eye surgery may undercorrect or overcorrect vision due to its difficulty. The patient may still need glasses or contacts if the treatment undercorrected their myopia. Overcorrection can cause hyperopia (farsightedness).
The procedure involves using a femtosecond laser to create a corneal lenticule which is extracted whole through a small incision without the use of an excimer laser. It is reported to achieve effects similar to laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with excellent post-operative outcomes.
SMILE is a minimally invasive Laser Vision Correction procedure for myopia correction. During SMILE eye surgery, a lenticule is created inside the cornea using the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser. Subsequently, the lenticule is extracted through a small incision, thereby achieving the desired vision correction.
