Do I need to remove all stain before restaining?

Water-based stains need to be stripped off before you apply a new finish, while oil-based stains can be recoated after you use a deck cleaner. To test the stain: Apply a small amount of deck stripper to a small area on your deck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, then wipe it off with a cleaning rag.

How do you remove a layer of stain?

Sand the dark stain with 100-grit sandpaper. To blend in the area, feather the edges with 150-grit sandpaper. Work with the grain, and dont push too hard. Once you sand out the stain, apply several light coats of wood varnish that matches the original finish.

Can you strip off stain?

Removing stain from wood is a simple DIY project. First, youll need to remove the finish thats been applied on top of the stain using a chemical stripper. Next, scrape the stripper off and sand away the remaining stain. Common wood finishes include polyurethane, lacquer, shellac, varnish, and many more.
