Because of a change in the alignment of Route 66 in 1937, there is an intersection where Route 66 crosses itself at Central Avenue and 4th Street in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico. Here, you can stand on the corner of Route 66 and Route 66.
Route 66 at a Crossroads New Mexico is the only state along Route 66 where the historic highway crosses itself!
Route 66s popularity led to its downfall, with traffic swelling beyond its two-lane capacity. In 1956, legislation created the Interstate System, and over the course of three decades, five separate interstates bypassed segment after segment of Route 66.
Route 66 and Albuquerque have had a long standing romance. Running through the heart of the city along Central Avenue, this historic highway leads travelers through some of the citys most beloved neighborhoods and is still a jumping off point for transportation.
Although a number of western states retain their state highway 66 as the decommissioned US 66, the Mother Road did not run through Colorado, and SH 66 has no connection to the famed Historic Route 66.
The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).
Only 800 miles of Route 66 were paved in 1926. It was paved end-to-end only in 1937. Because of a change in the alignment of Route 66 in 1937, there is an intersection where Route 66 crosses itself at Central Avenue and 4th Street in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.
