The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
The Pap Perfect Plastic Spatula is used to collect cell samples from the ectocervix for Pap smear or Liquid Cytology. (The endocervical sample is usually collected with a Cytobrush Plus GT Endocervical Sampler.)
Women who have cancer of the cervix may not have any symptoms. Regular Pap smears can detect cancer of the cervix and any cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. Pap smears can also detect other conditions such as infections or inflammation.
During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
A cervical biopsy is a procedure to remove tissue from the cervix to test for abnormal or precancerous conditions, or cervical cancer. The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus.
Next, using a small spatula or brush, a sample of cells and mucus is lightly scraped from the exocervix (see illustration in What is Cervical Cancer? ). A small brush or a cotton-tipped swab is then inserted into the opening of the cervix to take a sample from the endocervix .
