Other risk factors include obesity, a family history of heart failure, hypertension and diabetes.
Age. Your heart is a muscle that weakens over time, which is why adults 65 and older are at increased risk for developing congestive heart failure. About 6.2 million adults have developed heart failure in the U.S. alone, making it one of the leading causes of death among American adults.
Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease and the most common cause of heart failure. The disease results from the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, which reduces blood flow and can lead to heart attack.
Heart failure can happen at any age. It happens to both men and women, but men often develop it at a younger age than women. Your chance of developing heart failure increases if: Youre 65 years old or older.
Coronary artery disease, heart attack, and high blood pressure are the main causes and risk factors of heart failure. Other diseases that damage or weaken the heart muscle or heart valves can also cause heart failure. Heart failure is most common in people over age 65, African-Americans, and women.
The risk of developing CAD increases with age, and includes age 45 years in men and 55 years in women. A family history of early heart disease is also a risk factor, such as heart disease in the father or a brother diagnosed before age 55 years and in the mother or a sister diagnosed before age 65 years.
A person in their 20s can develop heart failure. Several risk factors, including smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and others, can increase a persons risk of developing heart failure. When heart failure occurs at a young age, people often report a reduced quality of life.
Overweight, physical inactivity, unhealthy eating, and smoking tobacco are risk factors for CAD. A family history of heart disease also increases your risk for CAD, especially a family history of having heart disease at an early age (50 or younger).
Almost 1.4 million persons with CHF are under 60 years of age. CHF is present in 2 percent of persons age 40 to 59. More than 5 percent of persons age 60 to 69 have CHF. CHF annual incidence approaches 10 per 1,000 population after 65 years of age.
Although the risk of heart attack (myocardial infarction, or MI) in young people is relatively low, between 4% and 10% of heart attacks occur in those under 45.
