Optima is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf and released by the D. Stempel AG foundry, Frankfurt, West Germany in 1958.
Verdana is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft Corporation, with hand-hinting done by Thomas Rickner, then at Monotype. Demand for such a typeface was recognized by Virginia Howlett of Microsofts typography group and commissioned by Steve Ballmer.
Generally, copyright law in the U.S. does not protect typefaces. Fonts may be protected as long as the font qualifies as computer software or a program (in fact, most fonts are programs or software). Bitmapped fonts are considered computerized representations of a typeface (and are not protected by copyright law).
The legal precedent that typefaces are not eligible for protection under U.S. copyright law was established before that in 1978 in Eltra Corp. v. Ringer. However, fonts can be protected by design patent, and computer programs that implement typefaces may be protected by copyright.
In most jurisdictions, typeface designs themselves are not eligible for copyright protection. This means that the artistic concepts and shapes of letters in a typeface are generally not protected by copyright law. You can create a new typeface that is visually similar to an existing one without infringing on copyright.

Look for Licensing Documentation If youve purchased a font or downloaded it from a legitimate source, it should come with a licensing agreement or a ReadMe file. This document will typically provide clarity on usage rights and any copyright claims.
