The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer. A Pap smear may also detect certain infections and inflammation.
The HPV test can also pick up on indicators of cervical cancer risk even if a Pap test fails to do so. Why might the HPV test be more accurate than the Pap smear? For starters, the Pap smear process is not infallible accuracy of results greatly rely on a cytologists visual interpretation of cervical cells.
Out of which, 95% ethanol is the commonly used fixative. Hence, the conventional method for fixation of Pap smear is to fix the Pap smear immediately in 95% ethyl alcohol after preparing the smear.
Acetic acid or vinegar is placed on the cervix and vagina to stain the cells and to allow the clinician to better see where the abnormal cells are located and the size of any abnormal areas. The size, type, and location of abnormal cells help to determine which area or areas may need to be biopsied.
This test looked for cervical cell changes that could develop into cervical cancer. Women and people with a cervix aged 18 to 70 were invited to do the test every two years. In 2017, the Pap test (commonly referred to as the Pap smear test) was replaced with the Cervical Screening Test.
Can a blood test replace a Pap smear? No. HPV stays on the skin and mucosal surfaces and changes cervical cells. Only the collection of cell samples done for Pap smears can detect these cell changes.
