Use compatible vent deflectors. Peel off the backing and stick it to your existing vent. Make a channel to channel out all the air. On the bottom piece, make your own floor vent or vent cover.
Covering the floor registers in your home is potentially dangerous if you cover them when using the heating or cooling system. The air pushes through the grates, but the covers block the air from escaping.
Depending on your setup, these vent covers are called registers or grilles. Vent covers can also be located on the side of your walls or in the floor. Registers and grilles help regulate the air flow to and from your HVAC unit. These vent covers can be made of wood, plastic or metal in a variety of styles.
Long story short: Its never a good idea to cover up cold air returns. Dont succumb to the temptation, and always check that air is circulating freely when you move furniture. If your HVAC system isnt performing the way you would like, it might have other efficiency issues.

Covering your supply register vents (the ones seen in each room of your home) may cause your HVAC system to work harder to distribute air properly and could cause pressure to build up in your air ducts.
