Does AMI include user data?

User Data is an attribute of an Amazon EC2 instance, not an AMI. There is software called cloud-init on the AMI that will look at the User Data and determine whether it is a script.

How to patch AMIs?

AMI updates patching (using patched AMIs for Auto Scaling groups) Create an instance with the new AMS AMI, customize the instance and create a new golden AMI. Share your existing golden AMI with AMS by using the Amazon EC2 console, and submit a service request for AMS to update your golden AMI.

What is the retention period of AMI?

For count-based retention, the range is 1 to 1000 . After the maximum count is docHubed, the oldest AMI is deregistered when a new one is created. For age-based retention, the range is 1 day to 100 years. After the retention period of each AMI expires, it is deregistered.

Does AMI contain data?

So, snapshot has the system / OS data. AMI is (snapshot + machine/hardware metadata). Here are few more differences between AMI and EBS Snapshots: 1) An AMI is launchable and contains links to the root device and may contain links to snapshots of the other data volumes.

What is not stored in AMI?

Specifically, an AMI does not store instance settings such as the instance type, which determines the hardware of the host computer for your instance. It also does not store network settings like VPC configurations or security group details, as these are configured when you launch an instance from the AMI.

Launch permissions that control which AWS accounts can use the AMI to launch instances.
