Do you get paid royalties for that release? The answer is yes, but some things have to be done first. You as the person making the cover will end up PAYING a mechanical royalty to the artist or songwriter for your cover. There are a number of services you can do this through.
No matter how unique and different your version is, someone else legally owns the song and is therefore entitled to royalties. By requesting a mechanical license, you are ensuring that the original creator of the song is getting their fair share of the sales of the cover.
There are two main ways to obtain song licenses: working directly with the rights owners (the do-it-yourself method) or paying a service to handle the whole thing. Many U.S. publishers use the Harry Fox Agency (HFA) to manage their mechanical licenses and payments.
Use your original songs and content: Using your own songs, original music, or royalty-free music is the only way to ensure that the original artist does not obtain copyright strikes on their channel. You can use royalty-free music as a backdrop to your own lyrics and video content.
While you own the recording of your cover song, the copyright owner owns the composition and still give permission for the composition to be used in audiovisual media (this is a separate license from the compulsory mechanical license).
While you dont need prior permission to cover a song, you do have to obtain a mechanical license before you release it. This ensures that the writer and publisher of the song both get paid and credited properly. And it ensures you dont get sued.
When someone records and releases a song, you are free to do your own cover version of that song by obtaining a mechanical or compulsory license. Then, every time your cover version is sold or reproduced, you (or your record label) must pay the statutory royalty fee for that song (currently 9.1 per copy in the US).
When you record a cover of an existing song, you are effectively using someone elses copyrighted work and they must be compensated for the use when you distribute the recording in physical and/or digital media.
