What Book Format Should You Use: EPUB, PDF, or MOBI/AZW3? In almost every case, you should start by using the EPUB file format for your book. Even if you plan to distribute your eBook on the Amazon marketplace, you should use the EPUB file, as this is what Amazon recommends and accepts.
Mobi files generated from full epubs can contain the entire source epub as well, doubling the size of the source. This can be prevented however with the proper settings in kindlegen. In total, the average size of publications (general fiction, general layout, 1 or 2 fonts) is somewhere between 1 to 3 megabytes.
Compress your documents into a ZIP file to send more than 50 MB. The conversion service automatically opens the ZIP files and converts them to the Kindle format.
An EPUB file is the most widely used, and best supported format for an eBook. It plays on virtually all devices, including: Kindle.
Hold down the icon for the Mobi file attachment. A menu should open which says Open In. Select Kindle.
The mobi file is so much larger because it actually contains several files within: versions for each Kindle format (MOBI7, KF8), as well as an entire copy of the source EPUB file used to create it. These multiple versions are created when an EPUB file is converted into Amazon's proprietary mobi format.
What Is The Difference Between EPUB VS Mobi? The main difference between EPUB and MOBI is that EPUB is widely supported across all platforms whilst MOBI is predominantly a Kindle format. The EPUB standard is maintained by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), a global trade and standards organization.
After 2022, Amazon not only recommends you use the EPUB format instead, but officially will not allow you to upload MOBI to KDP or sideload MOBI onto your Kindle devices. AZW and its predecessors are essentially the same as MOBI, but with a different name and DRM (Digital Rights Management) scheme.
Different formats are suitable for different uses. It's a matter of using what's most appropriate for your needs. MOBI is best for Amazon platforms, EPUB is a general use format, and PDF is best for print. Keep all three in mind when you find yourself downloading an ebook.
If you're using anything other than a Kindle or the Kindle app, then EPUB is the better format. The only real reason to use MOBI is for compatibility with Amazon's e-reader and app, but otherwise it has no advantages over EPUB, which is a widely accepted format that is much easier to work with.
