A process is a program under execution i.e. an active program. Processes require more time for context switching as they are heavier. Threads require less time for context switching as they are lighter than processes.
The LWP appears to be a virtual processor on which the application can schedule a user thread to run, to the user-thread library. Each Light Weight Process is attached to a kernel thread, and it is kernel threads that the operating system schedules to run on physical processors.
The threads library uses underlying threads of control called lightweight processes that are supported by the kernel. You can think of an LWP as a virtual CPU that executes code or system calls. You usually do not need to concern yourself with LWPs to program with threads.
Real-time threads are schedulable objects and, therefore, can have associated release, scheduling, memory and processing group parameters. A real-time thread can also have its memory area set.
User-Level threads are managed entirely by the run-time system (user-level library). The kernel knows nothing about user-level threads and manages them as if they were single-threaded processes. User-Level threads are small and fast, each thread is represented by a PC,register, stack, and small thread control block.
LWP gives the thread id of each thread. NLWP is the number of threads in the system for the underlying process. In the ps output above, rsyslogd (pid 852) has 4 threads, NetworkManager (pid 874) has three threads and polkitd (pid 893) has two threads.
Threads are sometimes called lightweight processes because they have their own stack but can access shared data. Because threads share the same address space as the process and other threads within the process, the operational cost of communication between the threads is low, which is an advantage.
Scheduling of threads involves two boundary scheduling, Scheduling of user level threads (ULT) to kernel level threads (KLT) via lightweight process (LWP) by the application developer.
In RTLinux, all threads share the Linux kernel address space. To create a new realtime thread, we use the pthreadcreate(3) function. This function must only be called from the Linux kernel thread (i.e., using initmodule()): #include
