In some settings, as directed by the American Hospital Association and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), patients wear a purple DNR band as a visual reminder to healthcare providers.
A do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops.
DNR protocols typically require the signing of an out-of-hospital DNR order by both the clinician and patient (or the patients surrogate) and the use of a special identifier (eg, a bracelet or brightly colored form) that is worn by or kept near the patient.
I, , request limited emergency care as herein described. I understand DNR means that if my heart stops beating or if I stop breathing, no medical procedure to restart breathing or heart functioning will be instituted.
Strictly defined, a do not resuscitate/do not intubate (DNR/DNI) status indicates a patient does not want to receive CPR or intubation in the event of cardiopulmonary arrest.
A Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order alerts physicians, emergency personnel and healthcare institutions that the person named in the order does not wish to receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The most accurate form of identification for patients outside of licensed facilities is a medallion or bracelet attached to the patient. Use of such a medallion should never make the patient uncomfortable and should always be optional. Every local EMS system should accept an EMSA approved DNR bracelet or medallion.
In summary, the minimum requirement in order for a DNR form to be valid is the valid signature and date of the patient, or of their legally recognized healthcare agent in the event that they are incapacitated or otherwise unable to express their wishes.
