Hi. Im Stan Muller, this is Crash Course Intellectual Property, and today were going to be talking about copyright law. As you might have guessed, the law of copyright relates to the right to copy, the copy right as it relates to copies of copyrightable works. You copy? [Theme Music] Right. So, the right to copy or reproduce copyright protected works is only one of the exclusive rights granted by the law of copyright. Were also gonna discuss what types of things can actually be copyrighted, what we call the subject matter. But first, lets talk a little bit about the history of copyright law in the United States. Why the United States? Not because the US is exceptional and not because Im a cultural imperialist trying to erode the identity and fabric of foreign nations. Mostly its just because were making this video in the United States and copyright law is territorial. So, in 1709, England passed the Statute of Anne, which is widely considered to be the first copyright law. The

To register a claim to copyright in a musical composition, you must submit the following to the Copyright Office: (1) a completed application form; (2) a nonrefundable filing fee; and (3) the required “deposit copies” of your work. This circular highlights issues common to registrations of musical compositions.
If you copy, reproduce, display, or otherwise hold out another's work (such as an image, musical recording, article, or any other type of work that you did not create) as your own, you are undoubtedly infringing on copyrighted material. This is true whether you benefited financially from the use or not.
The use of sheet music is covered by copyright law, which means misuse of sheet music can get you or your school into trouble. Under U.S. copyright law, fines for copyright infringement can typically range between $750 and $30,000.
As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years.
For example: To insert the copyright symbol, press Ctrl+Alt+C. To insert the trademark symbol, press Ctrl+Alt+T. To insert the registered trademark symbol, press Ctrl+Alt+R.
It's a copyright infringement to reproduce sheet music without the express permission of the copyright holder. The law makes a “fair use” exception that applies to teachers which is horribly vague.
The symbol © (the letter C in a circle), or the word "Copyright" or the abbreviation "Copr."; The year of first publication of the work; and. The name of the owner of copyright in the work.
Anyone found to have infringed a copyrighted work may be liable for statutory damages up to $30,000 for each work infringed and, if willful infringement is proven by the copyright owner, that amount may be increased up to $150,000 for each work infringed.
include the copyright symbol (©), the name of the copyright owner, and the URL for the terms of use, in each downloadable file (if possible, on each page of the downloadable file: once a document has been downloaded, schools may copy parts of it and those parts may not include the copyright notice or terms of use)
The only one who can give you permission to make copies is the owner of the copyright – the publisher, composer, etc. In other words, the U.S. Copyright Laws state that, if music or lyrics are under copyright protection: you CANNOT reproduce the music or lyrics without permission.
