You can get an EIN without an ITIN by sending Form SS-4 to the IRS by mail or fax (instructions).
An EIN is used by the IRS to identify a business, such as an LLC. A TIN is an umbrella term which includes the EIN (and the SSN and ITIN as well). Said another way, think of the TIN as the parent and the EIN as the child. An EIN is a type of TIN, but a TIN is not a type of EIN.
Therefore, you can use a TIN in place of an EIN. However, you cannot use an EIN in place of a TIN. Another difference between these two numbers is that the TIN can be received immediately after verification is complete at no cost, while an EIN needs time as state guidelines have to be checked before it is issued.
The IRS instructions for Form 1099 allows you to mask the recipient Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) on paper copies given to recipients. The recipients TIN is truncated on all 2018 and later 1099 forms except Copy A (Federal) and Copy 1 (State Tax Department).
A TINwhether an SSN, EIN, or ITINmust be furnished when you file your taxes or when claiming certain benefits. While you can use a TIN in various ways, an EIN must be used solely for filing business taxes by U.S. residents. When you compare a TIN number vs EIN, the EIN, again, is a type of TIN used for reporting tax.
Many sole proprietors and single-member LLCs arent required to have an employer identification number if they dont have employees. Instead, they can generally use their Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number when filing their business taxes.
