Unless you have an engine whose power falls off dramatically between peak power and redline rpms, or one where the redline is way above the peak power rpm, that means shifting at the redline.
A car rev is fine when done occasionally as it ensures better oil circulation throughout the engine. It can also help revive the battery when jumpstarting a car. However, frequent revving can do more damage than good to vehicle engines.
If were talking about an automatic, it will have an internal lubrication pump, but accidentally redlining the engine once when its cold isnt likely to hurt anything. The concern with cold oil is that it doesnt want to flow, which means it might not distribute around the transmission as fast once the car is moving.
The redline is generally understood to mean the maximum revs the engine is built to withstand for fairly short periods of time only without failure. So if a car with a computerized engine has an automatic transmission, you can very likely run it to redline hundreds of times without doing it any serious harm.
Accidentally redlining your engine for a few seconds shouldnt be a problem, but excessively hitting the redline can cause premature engine wear and valve float.
No. Engines are designed in such a way that they can perform at redline without breaking down or taking damage at those RPMs. This doesnt mean that you should redline your engine often.
Occasional redlining is generally safe, but regular redlining can damage the engine over time and lead to car engine failure.
If youre not accelerating, youre spinning, which is wasted power. Same thing with the rev limiter. If youre hitting it, your engine is not making as much power as it could to turn the back tire. For most people and most motorcycles, hitting the redline every now and again shouldnt be an item of concern.
