o You may shower 48 hours after your surgery and get your incisions wet. Let the water run down over the incisions but do not rub or scrub them. o Do not soak or submerge the surgical site for at least 3 weeks following surgery. o Rest and elevate your leg for the first 24 hours.
When youve torn your ACL you will lose a range of motion. Try bending your knee and then straightening it out. If you cant bend your knee to a 90 degree angle or straighten out your leg because of pain, stiffness and swelling, then it is likely that youve torn your ACL.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
On average, patients resume sports and other activities between 6-12 months after surgery. No pain or swelling, full range of motion in the knee, and good muscle strength and endurance are all signs your recovery is going smoothly.
How is an ACL injury diagnosed? An ACL tear can be diagnosed by a physician through a history and physical examination. On physical examination, the physician can specifically assess the amount of motion present and determine if the ACL is torn.
Therefore, an ACL sprain is a Grade 1 or 2 injury to the ACL. The ligament has sustained some minor to moderate tearing, but the ligament has remained intact and can still perform its designed function. An ACL tear is when the ligament has partially or fully torn and can no longer perform its designed function.
model of self-care at home: Rest. General rest is necessary for healing and limits weight bearing on your knee. Ice. When youre awake, try to ice your knee at least every two hours for 20 minutes at a time. Compression. Wrap an elastic bandage or compression wrap around your knee. Elevation.
To determine whether a tear is partial or complete, a doctor will perform several manual tests and order an MRI. Tests include: Lachman test: The physician will try to pull the shin bone away from the thigh bone. If the ACL is torn but still intact, the bones wont move or will do so only slightly.
