The name amyl alcohol without further specification applies to the normal (straight-chain) form, 1-pentanol. Three of these alcohols, 2-methyl-1-butanol, 2-pentanol, and 3-methyl-2-butanol (methyl isopropyl carbinol), contain stereocenters, and are therefore chiral and optically active.
1-Pentanol, also known as butylcarbinol or 1-pentyl alcohol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as primary alcohols. Primary alcohols are compounds comprising the primary alcohol functional group, with the general structure RCOH (R=alkyl, aryl).
At room temperature, pentanol is a flammable liquid with a fusel-like smell. Pentanol is commonly used as a solvent in the preparation of household and industrial products such as paint, lubricants, fuels, and resins.
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. If swallowed the substance may cause vomiting and could result in aspiration pneumonitis. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system. Exposure at high levels could cause lowering of consciousness.
Pentanol represents one example of an alcohol hydrocarbon. The chemical formula for pentanol is C 5 H 12 O , which indicates the presence of five carbons, twelve hydrogens, and one oxygen atom. The pentanol structural formula, which indicates the bonding arrangement within the molecule, is C H 3 ( C H 2 ) 3 C H 2 O H .
This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Dispose of con- tents/container in ance with local/regional/national/international regulations. Do not empty into drains. It is a dangerous waste; only packagings which are approved (e.g. acc. to ADR) may be used.
Used as a solvent and to make other chemicals. Pentan-1-ol is a short-chain primary fatty alcohol that is pentane in which a hydrogen of one of the methyl groups is substituted by a hydroxy group. It has been isolated from Melicope ptelefolia. It has a role as a plant metabolite and a human metabolite.
Amyl Alcohol is a clear liquid with a mild Alcohol odor. It is used as a solvent, in synthetic flavorings, and in making other chemicals.
