Treating Abnormal Pap Smears The area from which the unhealthy cells were found is frozen. The frozen tissue is sloughed off by the body and new, healthy tissue will then grow in its place. During this process, a heavy, watery discharge may occur for approximately two weeks.
During a Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer. Collecting cells from the cervix can cause light bleeding or spotting that may last for 12 days.
Irregular bleeding is a common sign of cervical cancer. However, bleeding following a Pap smear can be a sign of many other issues, including an infection, an STI, or pregnancy. Dont immediately assume unusual bleeding after a Pap test is a sign of cancer.
Its still possible to get your Pap smear done despite being on your period. However, there may be a risk of inaccurate results, especially if your flow is heavy during the day of your exam. As a rule of thumb, its best to call your OB-GYN if you have a Pap scheduled and have unexpectedly started your period.
It is normal to experience some spotting after a Pap smear, even when you are pregnant.
Watch closely for changes in your health, and be sure to contact your doctor or nurse advice line if: You have vaginal bleeding or pain for more than 2 days after the test. It is normal to have a small amount of bleeding for a day or two after the test.
Any disruption or disturbance to the cervical tissues, which may include a Pap smear, can result in additional bleeding. It is quite common for patients to experience light bleeding or spotting after a Pap smear. More severe bleeding and cramping is less common and may suggest there is a bigger issue present.
