Cleaning up effects with a clean-up function Another way to clean up an effect in useEffect is to use a clean-up function. A clean-up function is a function that is called after the main effect function has been completed, but before the component is unmounted or the effect is re-run.
Cleaning up side effects in React is a method of removing side effects that are no longer required. This, in turn, avoids memory leaks, which occur when your program or application attempts to perform an unnecessary operation or update a state memory location that no longer exists.
For event listeners, you can define them in the useEffect callback by attaching the addEventListener function to the element, and then cleanup the listeners by attaching the removeEventListener function to the element on the useEffect cleanup function.
The useEffect Hook is designed to allow the return of a function within it, which serves as a cleanup function. The cleanup function prevents memory leaks a situation where your application tries to update a state memory location that no longer exists and removes unnecessary and unwanted behaviors.
The useEffect([]) syntax is used when you want the effect to run only once after the initial render and not on subsequent renders. This is equivalent to the componentDidMount lifecycle method in class components. The empty array [] means that the effect does not depend on any values from the component scope.
The useEffect cleanup function is invoked when an element that makes use of the useEffect hook is taken from the screen. It is in charge of tidying up any unintended consequences that damage the code. Thus, before the component is unmounted, it makes sure that everything is in working order.
You can use the setTimeout method within the useEffect hook to schedule a callback when the component mounts. However, its crucial to clear the timeout when the component unmounts to prevent potential memory leaks.
