How do we know where space debris is located? A Space Surveillance Network (SSN) operated by the U. S. Air Force tracks objects in space. The SSN has radar and optical sensors at various sites around the world as shown in the figure below.
As of 2021, the United States Space Surveillance Network was tracking more than 15,000 pieces of space debris larger than 10 cm (4 inches) across. It is estimated that there are about 200,000 pieces between 1 and 10 cm (0.4 and 4 inches) across and that there could be millions of pieces smaller than 1 cm.
The international space station (ISS) has to regularly adjust its position to avoid space debris. One way to get rid of this orbital refuse is to send space vehicles to capture and 'de-orbit' the junk, using tools such as a net, harpoon or robotic arm.
The ClearSpace-1 mission, built by Swiss startup ClearSpace, will home in on a piece of debris the size of a washing machine, grapple it with a four-armed claw, and escort it down to a lower orbit where the duo will enter the atmosphere and burn up.
ClearSpace-1 is Mandated and Supported by ESA The mission actively cleans up space while also trailblazing the technologies needed for future commercial debris removal. ClearSpace-1 will launch in 2025-26.
One way to remove these inactive satellites from orbit is by pulling them down into the Earth's atmosphere, where they will burn up. To accomplish this, the ESA developed the “space claw,” known as ClearSpace-1, which will launch in 2025 and is designed to capture and dispose of space junk.
Based on statistical models produced by ESA's space debris office, it is estimated that there are 36,500 objects larger than 10cm, 1 million objects between 1-10cm, and an extraordinary 130 million objects between 1mm to 1cm.
The development of other cleanup technologies has been underway for years. In 2016, Japan's space agency sent a 700-meter tether into space to try to slow down and redirect space junk. In 2018, a device called RemoveDebris successfully cast a net around a dummy satellite.
The most effective shortterm means of reducing the space debris growth rate is through the prevention of inorbit explosions (via passivation of space objects at the end of their operational life) or collisions (via collision avoidance manoeuvres while the objects are still active).
Space junk, or space debris, is any piece of machinery or debris left by humans in space. It can refer to big objects such as dead satellites that have failed or been left in orbit at the end of their mission. It can also refer to smaller things, like bits of debris or paint flecks that have fallen off a rocket.
