[Music] hi my name is katrina gauett and im a grade 5 teacher with the waterloo catholic district school board i wanted to show you how i use words their way but more specifically how i use the assessment tool at the beginning of the year and again midway to assess where students spelling stages are so then i can do the weekly word sort activities using the words their way program so ill start us off with showing you the documents that i use okay so what um i use is the document the blam balance literacy and assessment measures document my school board provides us with and i just have this section pulled out of it these spelling assessment measures and it just gives you the purpose and teacher instructions um and then what i pay particular attention to okay so here they have some black line masters that you some of them you can you should use and some of them you can use so theres this one here where you can photocopy it and this is what the student fills out um theyre spelling wo

There are 3 levels of spelling inventory that zoom in on three different difficulties of skills. The primary spelling inventory, elementary inventory, and upper-level inventory. The focus shifts along the Words Their Way developmental spectrum from Letter Name Alphabetic to Derivational Relations.

Each feature that is correctly spelled is circled and given a point. If a word is spelled correctly, the student also gets another point for the whole word in the Word Correct row.
The problem with spelling lists and weekly spelling tests is that the information is not assimilated into other subjects. We do not learn the correct spelling to use in our writing. Instead, we learn the spelling for the test and then immediately forget it.
Scoring: Check off or highlight the features for each word which are spelled ing to the descriptors at the top. Assign 1 point for each feature (some words are scored for some features and not others). Add an additional point in the Word Correct column for entire words that are spelled correctly.
