The law, which comes into effect from October 2021, will require businesses to provide full ingredient and allergen labelling on foods which are pre-packed for direct sale.
From 25 February 2024, food businesses are required to meet new plain English allergen labelling requirements for how certain foods known to be common allergens are declared. These changes will mean food allergen information is clearer and easier to find on food labels.
Earlier this year sesame was added as the ninth major food allergen when the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act became effective on Jan. 1, 2023. This means that sesame is now required to be listed on food labels as a major allergen.
The new amendment (EU) 2023/1545 will add 56 new substances to the allergens list, and these substances must be declared when present at certain concentrations in cosmetic products. These substances are mainly present in fragrances, which are organic compounds with characteristic, usually pleasant, odours.
