Hello, Im Chris Menard. In todays Excel video, Im going to cover a little bit of Excel basics / possibly intermediate. Is how to custom format your dates in Excel. Lets go ahead and dive right in. I have Microsoft Excel running, Ive got a blank file. Im going to go do this in D1, if you want to follow along with me, feel free to crank up Excel and do this. Im going to type in 1/1/2023, to put a date in here. Get your crosshairs Autofill, and just pull this down to row 12 or 13. Im going to stop at 13. Go back and change the January 5th, just to show you this to 12 1 23 and then also change the 6 again, just for demonstration purposes to August 5th, 2022. That works, now weve got a list of dates we can use. Highlight your dates. By default, Im on the Home tab and in the Number group, it says Date. Youve got Short Date in here and youve got Long Date. Go ahead and select Long Date. You get the pound signs, auto fit your column, get between D and E and double click. There are

Group Dates by Month and Year Right-click on one of the dates in the pivot table. In the popup menu, click Group. In the Grouping dialog box, select one or more options from the By list. To limit the dates that are grouped, you can set a Start and End date, by typing the dates in the Starting at and Ending at boxes.
Select the items that you want to group the field by. For date fields this is Years, Quarters, Months, Days, Hours, Minutes, Seconds.
The shortcut to format a cell as a date is CTRL + SHIFT + 3, and to format it as time, the shortcut is CTRL + SHIFT + 2. If these shortcuts dont work on your keyboard, press CTRL + 1 while on the cell, and choose a format you would like to have.
To get the current date and time, use the NOW function. Note: use the TODAY function to enter todays date in Excel.
Apply a custom number format Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. On the Home tab, under Number, on the Number Format pop-up menu. , click Custom. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Custom. At the bottom of the Type list, select the built-in format that you just created. Click OK.
In an Excel sheet, select the cells you want to format. Press Ctrl+1 to open the Format Cells dialog. On the Number tab, select Custom from the Category list and type the date format you want in the Type box. Click OK to save the changes.
The easiest way to do this is to start from a format this is close to what you want. Select the cells you want to format. Press CTRL+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type. Go back to the Category list, and choose Custom.
In Excel, dates are stored as sequential serial numbers. The imported dates are probably stored as a text value, instead of real numbers, and that is causing the formatting problem. Note: Only positive numbers can be formatted as valid dates.
Create a custom date format Select the cells you want to format. Press Control+1 or Command+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type. Go back to the Category list, and choose Custom.
