The short answer is yes, you can have multiple EIN numbers, but there are some guidelines to follow. If you own multiple businesses, youll need to obtain a separate EIN for each entity. For example, if you operate a sole proprietorship and a corporation, youll need two separate EIN numbers one for each business.
If you already have an EIN and the organization or ownership of your business changes, you may need to apply for a new number. For more information, refer to Do you need an EIN and Publication 1635, Understanding Your EINPDF.
For Sole Proprietors, only one EIN can be issued to the individual. The Sole Proprietor may change business type/name by filing the appropriate documentation with his or her local municipality. For all other entities, there are no limits on the number of EINs one may file for new businesses.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
An EIN is not linked or associated with your SSN. As such, it provides additional personal privacy protection by using a different number than your SSN for reporting purposes. You can easily apply online for the EIN through the IRS. In addition to privacy, there are other advantages to obtain an EIN.
Business owners should notify the IRS so they can close the IRS business account. Keep business records. How long a business needs to keep records depends on whats recorded in each document.
The simple answer to the question of how many EINs you are allowed is as many as the number of business entities you have. A single business or entity can have only one, although there are situations where you will need to apply for a new one due to changes to your business.
All requests for EIN Change should be submitted by the grantee in Grants Management Module as a new amendment by accessing Manage Amendments, click New, select ACL Change in Institution Name or EIN (Not Both) (Type 8) and Create Amendment. The first amendment will deobligate the funds from the existing EIN.
