Encrypt a zip file with Windows Right-click or press and hold the zip file you want to encrypt. Select Properties. Click the Advanced button and check the box next to Encrypt contents to secure data. Select OK to close the Advanced Attributes window and then select Apply. Click OK.
From the Archive format field, select zip. Under the Encryption section, enter a strong password or passphrase in the Enter passphrase field and again in the Reenter passphrase field. Ensure the Encryption method is AES-256. Onced finished, click OK.
Encrypt a zip file in the Mac Terminal Open your Spotlight Search bar and search Terminal. Type zip -er desiredfilename. Drag and drop the file or files you want to compress into a zip file into the Terminal window. Press the Enter key. Next you will be prompted to enter a password.
The short answer: an encrypted zip file would show that you implemented a control to protect PHI. Most likely this satisfies one aspect of HIPAA. The reason that you may NOT want to use an encrypted zip file is that you dont have a lot of audit ability built into the process.
Password-protect a ZIP file using Encrypting File System Right-click the ZIP file you want to protect with a password. Choose Properties and then Advanced. Select Encrypt contents to secure data. Click Apply.
Although Windows 10 doesnt have the option to protect folders and files with a password, it doesnt mean your data isnt secure. One of the reasons why you cant apply a password to a folder is that your account is already protected from unauthorized access with a password (and even encryption if you use BitLocker).
Right-click on the zip folder you want to encrypt. Alternately, you can press and hold on the file when using touch-enabled devices. Select Properties from the new menu and click Advanced. Choose the Encrypt Contents to Secure Data Box option.
Password protected Zip files are pretty vulnerable to brute force /rainbow dictionary type attacks since the file can be copied infinite times and attacked in parallel if required. Its unlikely theyll crack the encryption, rather theyd go for the keys/password.
