Home urine pregnancy tests have gotten better and better over the years. That said, is it still possible to see a faint line on a pregnancy test? If so, what does it mean? Are you pregnant or not? Stay tuned and I will answer these questions. Pregnancy tests measure the hormone hCG. hCG is produced by cells in the developing embryo called trophoblast cells. After an embryo implants and establishes a connection with the mothers circulation, the hCG is released into the bloodstream. Once the hCG in the blood docHubes the kidneys, the hCG is secreted into the urine. Therefore, pregnancy tests can be done using blood or urine to determine wh ether there is hCG present. What does a faint positive line mean? Any positive line, even a faint line, means that hCG has been detected in your urine. There are three situations in which hCG can be found in your urine. When taking a pregnancy test, any second line is considered a positive result, even if its lighter than the control line. In fact, the control line is often darker than the test line. A lighter first line might also indicate that your urine is diluted.
Some pregnancy tests involve two lines: a control line and a test line. The control line appears on every test, but the test line only appears if there are levels of the pregnancy hormone in your urine. If you take a pregnancy test and see two lines, you may think youre pregnant.
While home pregnancy tests detect hCG in urine to confirm pregnancy, they cannot tell you how much hCG your body is producing. So even though some people swear that a darker line on a pregnancy test means more hCG (and by extension, might mean twins), thats not the case.
Interpreting a Lighter Pregnancy Test Line When taking a pregnancy test, any second line is considered a positive result, even if its lighter than the control line. In fact, the control line is often darker than the test line. A lighter first line might also indicate that your urine is diluted.
As your pregnancy progresses, the levels of hCG will rise, so if you choose to test again, you will likely see a much stronger positive line. You can see how your hCG levels rise in your urine over the course of early pregnancy in the graph below.
In a nutshell: the more hCG in your body, the stronger and more visible the positive line will be. Whether the line is faint or bold, a pink line usually indicates you are pregnant.
This hormone triggers the body to produce more estrogen and progesterone, tells it to stop menstruating (or producing eggs), and thickens the uterus lining to support pregnancy. Repeat the test in two days: If theres a normal rise in hCG, that line will get darker, Ruiz says.
Although the line should be darker in relation to higher concentrations of hCG, the actual amount of hCG in a sample of urine can vary. This fluctuation is due in large part to the concentration of your urine at any given time.
