Lieutenant General Philemon Santos Jr. has been named by President Rodrigo Duterte as the new chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Santos, a seasoned intelligence officer, currently serves as the commander of the AFP Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom). He will be taking over from General Noel Clement, who is set to retire on January 5. Santos has been leading Eastmincom since January 2019, spearheading operations against communist rebels in various regions. A graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, Class of 1986, Santos is familiar with former police chiefs Ronald dela Rosa, Oscar Albayalde, and PNP Officer-in-Charge Archie Gamboa.
