If youve recently had surgery, here are some techniques your doctor may recommend to help reduce swelling and manage edema after surgery. Elevation. The fluids in your body are affected by gravity. Compression. Light movement. Massage. Physical therapy.
Swelling Rest: During the first 3 days you should rest with your leg elevated as much as possible. Ice: For the first week you should try to ice your knee 3 times a day for 20 minutes. Compression: You will usually have a Tubigrip stocking around your knee. Elevation: Elevating the leg will assist in reducing swelling.
Damage to any part of your knee can cause excess joint fluid to accumulate. Injuries that can cause fluid buildup in and around the knee joint include: Torn ligament, particularly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Cartilage (meniscus) tear. Irritation from overuse.
ACL injuries can either be complete or partial. While complete ACL tears almost always require surgery, partial ACL tears may be treated effectively with nonsurgical methods. ACL tears are graded by severity and are called sprains (a sprain is a stretch or tear in a ligament).
ACL surgery graft failure occurs in a small percentage of cases, estimated to be around 5% to 15%, depending on various factors such as patient age, activity level, and surgical technique.
Your goal should be to reduce this swelling as much as possible so your healing can begin. After Dr. Nolan completes the surgery, you can treat the swelling with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the RICE protocol). Aim for three or four 15-minute sessions with ice each day.
While inflammation effusion are an expected result of the trauma of an ACL injury, as well as the trauma of the surgery, this effusion should subside within the first 6-8 weeks after injury or surgery.
Effective management of knee swelling post-surgery is pivotal for a successful recovery. Approaches include: Elevation and Ice: Regularly elevating the affected leg and applying ice can docHubly reduce swelling. Compression Garments: These can help in maintaining fluid flow and reducing excessive swelling.
