If the pixel dimensions are given, multiply them by each other and the bit depth to determine the number of bits in an image file. For instance, if a 24-bit image is captured with a digital camera with pixel dimensions of 2,048 x 3,072, then the file size equals (2048 x 3072 x 24)/8, or 18,874,368 bytes.
Generally, a RAW file will be between two and six times larger than a JPEG file. RAW files are bigger because they contain a much greater amount of image data. A JPEG image is essentially all that data compressed down into a smaller file size thats easier to share.
You can use any software that converts image file types as your own personal image compressor. In Lightroom, you can compress your original photos by turning them into a JPG or a TIF file. JPGs tend to work best for sharing and storing images, because they maintain reasonable image quality at a relatively small size.
Typically, a high-quality JPEG image might range from 3 to 7 MB, allowing for about 150 to 340 images per GB. RAW: Preferred for professional photography due to its high quality and flexibility in editing. RAW files can range from 20 to 30 MB each, so you could store 30 to 50 images per GB.
How big is a RAW image? The size of a RAW file depends on the size of the sensor, and whether your camera is an MFT, APS-C, full-frame or medium format camera. Most RAW files are sized between 20 - 40 MB per file.
For uncompressed raw files, double the megapixels: so, a 24MP sensor produces about a 48-MB file. For compressed raw files, just use the megapixel count: 24MP = 24MB file. For JPEGs, cut the MP number in half: 24MP = 12-MB JPEG.
The main difference between any JPEG and RAW file is its size. RAW files are docHubly bigger than JPEG (and any other) image file formats. Thats because they contain all the raw image information captured by your digital cameras sensors, completely uncompressed.
