hello friends welcome to the second part of the complete series on photoemission spectroscopy in the previous video we have seen the basic principles and instrumentation of xps if you have missed that video you can find the link for the first video in description box now letamp;#39;s talk about the spectra obtained from the xps instrument we have seen that the instrument gives a plot of kinetic energy versus the number of electrons counted so number of electrons counted is plotted in y-axis and kinetic energy is plotted in x-axis so now you can see that it starts from the lower kinetic energy in the left and goes to higher kinetic energy in right as normally a graph is plotted but in most of the modern instruments kinetic energy is converted to binding energy with the formula h nu is equals to binding energy plus kinetic energy plus phi therefore the lower kinetic energy becomes higher binding energy and higher kinetic energy becomes lower binding energy this means now x-axis starts f

How to Analyze XPS Spectra Data XPS analysis is rooted in understanding the position and intensity of peaks on the survey scans and the high-resolution spectra data. The binding energy is calculated from the difference in the energy of the x-ray source and the kinetic energy of the photoelectron being detected.
These satellite peaks arise from localized charge transfer excitations that accompany the creation of a core hole 2. The presence and intensity of these satellite peaks can be used to determine the covalent character of the interaction between the Cd cation and the oxygen ligands 3. What is the significance of satellite peaks in the xps spectra of Cd3d5/2 SciSpace questions what-is-the-significance-of SciSpace questions what-is-the-significance-of
They both can be distinguished by using two different materials such as magnesium tube and aluminium tube. When using such two different materials, the auger peaks will be same in the spectrum, whereas, if two different materials are used the peaks of XPS are displayed.
The photoelectric effect applies to valence electrons, where a valence electron absorbs a photon and has sufficient energy to escape the atom, whereas the Auger effect typically applies to electrons in lower orbitals and only occurs when a vacancy is generated in a low orbital and a higher orbital electron falls into
In viewing the photoelectron spectrum of an element, you are also able to: Distinguish the different orbital levels in an atom. Determine the electron configuration of an atom. Each peak in a photoelectron spectrum represents a different orbital level where electrons can be found.
The instrument allows you to plot the spectrum using binding energy instead of kinetic energy on the axis; then the photoelectron peaks will be at the same binding energies but the Auger peaks will appear at different places in this plot since the plot is with binding energy and not kinetic energy. Why Auger peaks in XPS spectrum represent Kinetic energy of Auger ResearchGate post Why-Auger-peaks- ResearchGate post Why-Auger-peaks-
In XPS, photons with sufficient energy hn are absorbed by a system causing core electrons are ejected from the sample. If the energy of the photons, hn, is larger than the binding energy of the electron (Eb), the excess energy is converted to kinetic energy of the emitted photoelectron (Ek). Here, higher binding energies mean also higher oxidation states. This is known as chemical shift.
