The primary difference between them is that engraving is a physical process, and etching is a chemical process. An engraver uses sharp tools to cut lines directly into a surface, while an etcher burns lines into a surface with acid.
Raster engraving is created by the laser scanning the engraved areas very much as a printer does, filling the area to be engraved line by line. Vector engraving, on the other hand, is created more like a line drawing. The laser follows the vector lines and draws them as a single line.
Annealing minimizes the risk of warping, rust and bacteria better than engraving, but it does come with certain drawbacks. Annealing takes more time than shallow engraving, which may not be desirable for companies that want to mass produce marked metal goods quickly.
Laser annealing consists of the slow heating of metals with a laser beam. As the metal is heated, oxygen is diffused below the surface. The metal begins to oxidize internally. Once cooled off, you are able to observe a change in the color of the metal.
Unlike traditional engraving which removes the surfaces material, laser annealing changes the surface color, without removing or damaging any material. This creates a permanent, high-contrast mark that is resistant to fading.
Both produce printing you can feel. Thermography feels more plasticky whereas engraving has a matte ink feel.
For one, the nooks and crannies in engraved metal surfaces can be difficult to clean and are more susceptible to corrosion or bacteria. In contrast, the annealing process removes nothing from the metals surface and leaves its texture unchanged.
There are different types of engravings including the following; Etching. Etching is a type of engraving that is used on crystal, stone, and glass. Rotary Engraving. Rotary Engraving is used on certain metals including gold, sterling silver, copper, and aluminium. Laser Engraving.
