George Milton is portrayed as a sharp, quick-tempered man in Of Mice and Men, but evolves into a selfless, caring one. George and Lennie's relationship, described like a master and his dog, is what drives most of the action.
While he initially scoffs at George and Lennie's dream of having a farm together he identifies with the dream and desire for companionship to shake off the unrelenting loneliness he experiences through his job and in society.
In the novel "Of Mice and Men" John Steinbeck, the author, uses the character of Crooks to represent racism and symbolize the marginalization of the black community occurring at the time in which the novel is set.
In chapter 6, the last chapter of Of Mice and Men, Lennie has killed Curley's wife and run away to the place that George told him to meet him at if something bad happened. When Curley finds his wife dead, he gathers the other men to hunt down and kill Lennie.
Some critics believe George represents that doomed man who longs to return to Eden. His one chance to avoid that fate is his relationship with Lennie, which makes them different from the other lonely men. But despite this companionship, at the end of the book, George is fated to be once again alone.
During their conversation, Lennie reveals the secret about the farm, which Crooks initially thinks Lennie is making up. Crooks also prods Lennie about his relationship with George and scares Lennie by suggesting that George might not come back. The more Crooks presses Lennie, the more Lennie becomes scared and upset.
George feels numb and empty, but he has done what he felt he had to do. Slim understands, taking him for a drink. But Carlson and Curley can not understand why George feels so bad. Their last words — "Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?" — indicate that the world is a cold and harsh place.
In Of Mice and Men the American Dream is symbolized by George and Lennie's desire for their own piece of land. They momentarily believe if they work hard and save their money, they can afford to buy a home and work only for their own upkeep rather than someone else's.
Crooks promises to work for nothing as long as he can live his life out there without the fear of being put out. Like all the others, he wants a place where he can be independent and have some security. But there is no security for anyone in a prejudiced world, least of all a black stable hand with a crooked back.
Curley's wife shows many sides to herself in chapter 4, she starts off being very nice and friendly, to getting slightly annoyed at the men and finally to get very upset at how she is constantly ignored by the other ranch workers and her husband. ...read more.
