An abnormal Pap smear doesnt necessarily mean you have cervical cancer. In most cases, an abnormal Pap test is a result of: A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A sexually transmitted infection (STI or STD), such as herpes or trichomoniasis.
A Pap smear cant detect STIs. To test for infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea, your healthcare provider takes a swab from your cervix.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Inflammation often causes a mildly abnormal Pap test. An inflamed cervix may look red, irritated, or eroded. Some of the common causes of cervical inflammation are: Bacteria (from an infection), yeast or monilia infections, or trichomonas infections.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
An abnormal cervical screening test result does not mean that you have cervical cancer. It means that cervical cell changes were found or that cells are infected with HPV. Depending on the results, you may need follow-up testing or treatment. Treatment for cervical cell changes works well.
6.1. 1 Papanicolaou Stain. The Papanicolaou stain is undoubtedly the most commonly used in cytology. It has three cytoplasmic dyes, orange G, eosin Y, and light blue.
