Left-sided heart failure symptoms include: Awakening at night with shortness of breath. Shortness of breath during exercise or when lying flat. Chronic coughing or wheezing. Difficulty concentrating. Fatigue. Fluid retention causing swelling, or edema, in the ankles, legs and/or feet. Lack of appetite and nausea.
Cardiac edema occurs when the hearts diseased or overworked left ventricle (hearts lower chamber) isnt able to pump out enough of the blood it receives from your lungs. This causes the heart to hold an excess amount of fluid; therefore, swelling.
Fluid overload means that there is too much fluid in the body. The increased level of fluid results in an excessive amount of fluid flowing around the circulatory system. This can overwork the heart and lead to heart failure.
Common symptoms of right-sided heart failure include: palpitations. chest discomfort.Right-sided heart failure. What are the symptoms of left-sided heart failure? Constant coughing. Shortness of breath with walking or bending over. Waking up short of breath or unable to lie flat at night. Weight gain. Swelling (edema) in your ankles, legs or abdomen.
Left-sided heart failure: The left ventricle of the heart no longer pumps enough blood around the body. As a result, blood builds up in the pulmonary veins (the blood vessels that carry blood away from the lungs). This causes shortness of breath, trouble breathing or coughing especially during physical activity.
Congestive heart failure causes one or both of the hearts lower chambers stop pumping blood well. As a result, blood can back up in the legs, ankles and feet, causing edema. Congestive heart failure can also cause swelling in the stomach area. This condition also can cause fluid to build up in the lungs.
Individuals with CHF could experience shortness of breath, swelling, fatigue, or irregular heartbeats as a result of their condition. These symptoms may flare up during a CHF exacerbation, which is a temporary but dangerous worsening of symptoms.
Loop diuretics should be used as first-line agents, with thiazides added for refractory fluid overload. Diuretic treatment should be combined with a low-salt diet,8 a -blocker, and an ACE inhibitor. The practitioner should begin with oral , 20 to 40 mg once daily.
ACE inhibitors (ACEIs), ARBs, beta-blockers, MRAs and diuretics form the basis of first-line pharmacological management of left ventricular systolic heart failure (HFrEF). Treatment doses should be increased to those shown to be of benefit in the major trials or to the highest tolerated doses.
