To duplicate a layer, hold alt and drag. Create black and white and curves adjustment layers. Adjust the curves by dragging on the ends. White is visible, black is transparent, and gray is semi-transparent. Merge the top 3 layers by selecting them while holding shift and right-clicking to merge them. Use "CTRL+A" to select everything, "CTRL+C" to copy. Hide the top layer. Create a layer mask by Alt+clicking on it. Paste the copied image on the layer mask with "CTRL+V". Exit the layer mask. Done.
