How do I know if basic authentication is being used?

In the Microsoft 365 admin center at , go Settings Org Settings Modern Authentication. In the Modern authentication flyout that appears, you can identify the protocols that no longer require Basic authentication.

How to find legacy authentication in Office 365?

Identify legacy authentication use Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least a Reports Reader. Browse to Identity Monitoring health Sign-in logs. Add the Client App column if it isnt shown by clicking on Columns Client App.

When was Basic authentication disabled?

Beginning in early 2023, we disabled Basic authentication for all tenants who had any type of extension. You can read more about the timing here. In Office 365 Operated by 21Vianet, we began disabling Basic authentication on March 31, 2023. All other cloud environments were subject to the October 1, 2022 date.

How to block legacy authentication in O365?

Browse to Identity Monitoring health Sign-in logs. Add the Client App column if it isnt shown by clicking on Columns Client App. Select Add filters Client App choose all of the legacy authentication protocols and select Apply. Also perform these steps on the User sign-ins (non-interactive) tab.

Why does Microsoft keep making me authenticate?

Clear your browser cache and cookies. This can often resolve issues with login prompts. Check your browser settings to make sure that cookies are enabled for Microsoft 365. Check with your IT department to see if there are any known issues with Microsoft 365 login prompts.

What is legacy authentication?

Legacy (or basic) authentication is characterized by: a client or network protocol which is incapable or not configured to do modern authentication. a client which sends both the username and password to the application. an application using the username and password to get a logon on behalf of the user.

How can I find which users are still using legacy authentication?

If you see modern mobile/desktop client or browser for a client in the Microsoft Entra logs, its using modern authentication. If it has a specific client or protocol name, such as Exchange ActiveSync, its using legacy authentication to connect to Microsoft Entra ID.
