Access Control Lists (ACLs) are a collection of permit and deny conditions, called rules, that provide security by blocking unauthorized users and allowing authorized users to access specific resources.
Whitelisting and blacklisting are two methodologies to control access to websites, email, software and IP addresses on networks. Whitelisting denies access to all resources and only the owner can allow access. Blacklisting allows access to all with the provision that only certain items are denied.
The Name field in an Access Control specifies the table records and a field to protect. The field list has a --None-- option and a * option. --None--: Grant access to records and all fields in the records. *: Grant access to all fields where there is no field-specific Access Control.
If a whitelist is configured but no IP address is added to the whitelist, the listener forwards all requests. Blacklist: All requests from the IP addresses or CIDR blocks specified in the ACL are denied. Blacklists apply to scenarios in which you want to block access from specific IP addresses.
ACLs on TCP and UDP ports are expressed as a list of IP addresses to Allow (whitelist mode) or Deny (blacklist mode). More advanced control over connecting clients is also possible through the Layer 4 Rules system.
Whitelist: allows access from specified IP addresses or CIDR blocks. Blacklist: denies access from specified IP addresses or CIDR blocks.
The attributes active, expiration, forbiddentags (ftags), roles, and trustedclients (tclients) place additional restrictions on accessing the service through the username. The username. Only one username can be specified per USER tag in a file-based ACL or record in the user table for a JDBC-based ACL.
Blacklisting means the classification of something as not authorised or not trustworthy. Whitelisting, on the other hand, defines something as trustworthy/approved.
