Find a wood sample of the same grain and species. Using a sample for comparison can help you find a more accurate match. The woods grain and species can both affect how the stain will appear once its dry. If you have any excess material in that same grain and species, use that as the sample.
Match Wood Undertones and Mix ingly Its best not to mix and match. Therefore, if your dominant wood tone is warm, use woods and stains that have yellow, orange or reddish undertones. If your wood has a cool undertone, then its best to stick woods and stains with grey, taupe, pink or green undertones.
Understand Your Woods Undertones If you introduce a second or third wood stain into a room, it should match the existing woods undertones. The wood types and finishes may be different, but the undertones should be in the same family.
An oak hardwood will finish differently than a piece of whitewood pine for example. What you can try which I myself have done with great success, is to build the piece, coat the entire piece with a white bare wood primer first, then you can apply whatever stain you want directly over the primer.
Look for wood colours with the same warm or cool undertones and pair them together. Unstained warm woods such as maple, cherry, walnut and white oak complement each other beautifully. Meanwhile, cooler, darker stain tones (think charcoal or black) layer nicely with one another.
Log Cabin Staining Tips Step 1: Dry your wood. Wood must be properly dried before applying stain for best absorption rates. Step 2: Clean your wood. Before you can stain your wood, youll need to clean the surface. Step 3: Apply two coats of stain. Step 4: Regularly apply a maintenance coat.
Fine-grained woods generally have pores that are too small for the pigments to settle into. As a result, usually pigment-containing stains will also include a small amount of a binder which helps to adhere the pigments to the wood. A common binder would be a drying oil such as linseed oil.
The two main ways of removing existing stain from the logs or wood from the exterior of a structure is to either sanding/grinding or blasting with a fine media, no coarser that 50/100 grit.
