How to use a W-4 to owe nothing on a tax return Use the correct tax-filing status. Make sure your W-4 reflects your current family situation. Accurately estimate your other sources of income. Accurately estimate your deductions. Take advantage of the line for extra withholding.
You would check the box if you have two jobs. If you have multiple jobs or a spouse that also works, you would go to page 3 Step 2(b) Multiple Jobs worksheet and work through the section to determine if you need additional taxes withheld from your paycheck. If this section does not apply to you, please leave blank.
Checking box 2(c) tells your employer that you have multiple jobs. If you dont want to disclose that fact, dont check the box. In this step, the form notes that individuals with multiple jobs should complete Form W-4 with the information from their highest-paying job.
Single. If you are single and do not have any children, as well as dont have anyone else claiming you as a dependent, then you should claim a maximum of 1 allowance. If you are single and someone is claiming you as a dependent, such as your parent, then you can claim 0 allowances.
Claiming 1 reduces the amount of taxes that are withheld from weekly paychecks, so you get more money now with a smaller refund. Claiming 0 allowances may be a better option if youd rather receive a larger lump sum of money in the form of your tax refund.
By placing a 0 on line 5, you are indicating that you want the most amount of tax taken out of your pay each pay period. If you wish to claim 1 for yourself instead, then less tax is taken out of your pay each pay period. 2.
