A new, safer alternative to chest binding is the use of a compression top. Compression tops are built from gentler fabrics than most other binders on the market right now. Compression tops are designed to compress the chest in a gentler fashion to help improve overall comfort, safety, and movement capabilities.
In extreme cases, breast tissue can become permanently damaged, she says. Strong, prolonged pressure around the chest and back can also cause changes to normal spine alignment, which may result in chronic pain.
Binding with TransTape FTM Transtape. TransTape is made from a blend of 95% cotton and 5% spandex with a medical grade acrylic adhesive. It is latex-free and non-medicated, making it hypoallergenic. With this said, however, you may experience irritation, itching or redness or blistering after wearing TransTape.
The trick is, if you wear two sports bras, and turn the outer one inside out, it does a fairly good job of binding, and ive used it quite often.
People bind in many different ways: Some people wrap their chests with elastic bandages, some wear a sports bra, neoprene or athletic compression wear, or layer several sports bras or shirts. Others wear commercially-available binders specially designed for this purpose (2).
If you only have compression shorts available, you can cut turn them into a shirt by cutting a hole in the crotch thats large enough for your head. You can turn one old shirt into a binder as well. To do this, cut the sleeves off, then cut the seams on both sides of the shirt. you now have two binders.
As an alternative to a dedicated binder, a good sports bra with high compression can serve as a binder. Sports bras wont provide as much compression as a binder but can be a stepping stone to binding later.
The most popular safe methods are to use commercial binders, sports bras, strategic layering, and bandages or elastic materials. If youre binding frequently, make sure to take breaks throughout the day and take days off, as binding continuously can cause negative side effects (2,4).
